Aston Martin DB11 Volante

Aston Martin DB11 Volante due in 2018

Aston Martin will launch the convertible Volante version of the new DB11 coupe in spring 2018, the company announced on Twitter.

The U.K. luxury automaker also tweeted a picture of a lightly disguised prototype version of the car showing a conventional cloth construction for the folding roof.

Until the Volante arrives, the company will live without a convertible variant of its flagship car. Production of the DB9 Volante it replaces ends this year.

The coupe version of the DB11 starts shipping at year end and Aston claims it already has 3,000 orders for the car. Last year the company sold 3,615 cars globally. The DB11 will be priced starting at $214,820, including shipping and the gas guzzler tax, in the U.S.

The DB11 Volante is expected to use the same 5.2-liter twin-turbocharged V-12 engine. In the coupe, it makes 608 hp to give the car a top speed of 200 mph. By the time the Volante arrives, Aston likely will also offer a promised V-8 twin-turbo from AMG, a division of Mercedes-Benz owner Daimler.

Aston Martin will launch a replacement for its entry Vantage coupe next year with the next high-performance Vanquish coupe slated for 2018. The automaker is also developing an electric version of its Rapide sedan along with Chinese company LeEco, and will make an SUV expected on sale by 2020.
